Question
I have a Validation > Model > General > “Invalid effective width” error. Why do I get this and how do I resolve it?
Answer
In the screenshot below two beams have been identified as having an invalid effective width issue.
Beam 1 is defined as a beam of Construction "Composite beam", however, the slab that is placed on the beam is not a slab of Type "Composite slab" and hence the error. The slab above the composite beam needs to be a composite slab so that the data of the two objects can interact together. Alternatively, the beam needs to be Construction "Non-composite beam".
Beam 2 is defined as a beam of Construction "Composite beam", however, there is no slab that is placed on the beam of Type "Composite slab" and hence the error. To resolve this issue, either the beam needs to be changed to a beam of Construction "Non-composite" or a Composite slab needs to be placed in the model.
