Tekla Structural Designer 2017i Service Pack 2


This Service Pack has been replaced by Service Pack 2a - please read both the content below and the Service Pack 2a Release notes

This release will upgrade your installation to Tekla Structural Designer 2017i SP2 version number and should be installed to ensure optimum function of the program.   It includes a number of enhancements and issue resolutions as detailed below.

If you are upgrading from a version earlier than the most recent Tekla Structural Designer 2017i SP1 (version you can find details of enhancements and fixes included in all previous releases in Tekla User Assistance (TUA) and Tekla Downloads.  You will find all the main releases listed in the Knowledge base area of TUA under Release notes while those for Service Packs can be found under Updates.  Links to release notes together with the version number can also be found in Tekla Downloads (login required).

Licensing & Installation

  • Licensing - no new license is required for this version.
  • Installation - this service pack requires Tekla Structural Designer 2017i to be installed and will upgrade this to version
    • Previous Versions and file compatibility - Files from all previous versions can be opened in Tekla Structural Designer 2017i SP2 however note that once saved they cannot then be opened in an older version.  If you wish to retain this option we therefore recommend using the File > Save As… option to save a new version of the file and retain the original.
    • 32bit (x86) and 64bit (x64) Versions - Service packs are available for both 32bit (x86) and 64bit (x64) versions of Tekla Structural Designer.  Before downloading, check which version you have currently installed via the Information button at the top right of the Tekla Structural Designer window, then download the appropriate service pack

Issues with Associated Bulletins

  • Concrete Beam Design -  US Head Code - Flanged beams (T-beams) - the calculated deflection could be underestimated - potentially resulting in a pass status rather than a failure - in the following specific circumstances; the options “Consider flanges” and “Include flanges in analysis” were both enabled, Section 8.12 produced a smaller flange width for design than that used in analysis, or resulted in the flange being ignored for design (53225).   For more information please see Product Bulletin PBTSD-1710-1.
    • The issue is addressed in this release.
  • Composite Beam Design - All Head Codes - for beams with the option “allow non-composite design” checked on and when designed as non-composite (due to composite design failure), the composite inertia was still used for deflection calculation resulting in an underestimate of deflections (14368).  For more information please see Product Bulletin PBTSD-1710-2.
    • The issue is addressed in this release.

Enhancements & Fixes

General & Modelling

  • Review View - Show/Alter State
    • Sway/Drift Check - a new attribute is added to graphically review and edit the Sway/Drift Check On/Off setting for columns.   The Sway/Drift Check On/Off setting can be applied to individual column stacks as well as the entire column in a single operation by activating the “Entire element” check box (4178).
    • User Defined Attribute (UDA) is added to the list of Attributes available in the Copy Properties function (52112).
    • Deflection Limits - when this attribute is selected the operation of the command prompt  is improved to remove the inappropriate prompt to select a deflection limit when the mode is set to Review (53254).
  • Floor Vibration Check - when defining a Floor Vibration Check, the selection of precast slabs  is now prevented as this floor type is currently beyond scope (4204).
  • Settings - Structural BIM - when unknown materials or decking are encountered during both Import and Export operations,  the user is required to make a selection for these from the available options.  This selection is stored for future Import/Export operations so it does not need to be made every time.  However, in some circumstances the user may wish to change this selection.  To enable this new controls are added in the form of buttons to Reset the mapping of Materials and/or Decking for both Import and Export.  These are located in Home > Settings > Structural BIM > Export > Mappings and ... Import > Mappings.  When clicked the relevant stored selections are deleted so that new selections can be made during the next Import/Export operation.
  • BIM Integration - Cellbeam Export - in some circumstances a “Rule47 Violation…” error could incorrectly occur in Cellbeam for some beams exported from a Tekla Structural Designer Model (14411).
  • Steel Beams - Sections:
    • Plated Sections - this issue relates only to version 2017i first release ( released Sept 2017)  - in which it was introduced - and 2017i SP1 (  The value of the section property  ye  - the distance from the top of the section to the neutral axis - was incorrectly set as the distance measured from the bottom flange.  (54058)
      • Note that only plated section properties actually created in version or later were affected.  For affected models with existing sections created in these version the value of  ye can now be corrected by saving and reopening the model in this release.
    • US Head Code - a program error would occur on changing a US steel beam section to a UK Asymmetric Beam section (53980).
    • Model Settings - Invalid data - pages which contain invalid data are now highlighted in the dialog page list by red text (54040).
  • Concrete Walls  - the following issues relate only to version 2017i first release ( released Sept 2017)  - in which they were introduced - and 2017i SP1 (
    • Australian Head Code - a program error would occur if concrete walls were selected via the structure tree or all walls were selected in the 3d view (54109).
    • All Head Codes - the default SFRS type for both meshed and mid-pier walls should be "Ordinary Reinforced Concrete Structural Walls" but was incorrectly set to "Other SFRS type" (54117).
  • Model Editing:
    • Delete or Copy - a program error could occur when deleting or copying members which were included in a Sub Structure (54137).
    • Move Model - rarely, a program error could occur when using the Move Model command in models containing Sub Models.  This could be worked around by un-checking all active levels in the Sub Models dialog prior to the move.  A workaround is no longer required (54138).


  • Load Combinations - All Head Codes - Equivalent Horizontal Forces/ Notional Horizontal Forces/ Notional Loads (EHF/ NHF/ NL) - a user-definable Service factor is now added for Notional Load cases included in a combination, allowing the engineer to control the factor applied to these in SLS (Service Limit State) combinations.  Previously when these load cases were added to combinations (either by the combination generator or manually) their SLS factor was greyed out (and a default value used internally).  The (editable) default values now produced by the Combination Generator for the SLS factor for Notional Load cases are;  BS code (all Countries) - 1.0; Eurocode (all Countries/ Annexes) - 0.0; US code (ASD and LRFD) - 1.0; IS code - 1.0; Australian code - 1.0 (13720, 14350).
  • Wind Wizard - rarely, where unused construction points remained resulting from model edits, a program error could occur when editing wind panels, re-running the Wind Wizard or deleting the wind model.  Such unused points are now removed (14380).
  • Pattern Loading - Analysis Process - in some circumstances for load cases including line loads, the pattern loading process could fail to complete correctly during the pre-analysis phase of applying planer loads.  This could result in some load not being and applied - and consequent Process Window analysis warnings and Load Summary check errors - or prevent completion of the analysis process (14188, 14345).

Analysis & Results

  • Slabs - Meshing:
    • When part of a slab in a level fails to mesh during the load decomposition phase of the analysis process, a Status > Meshing Error “Meshing failed” is now issued  and the analysis process terminated.  The error lists the problem level(s) so the engineer can take appropriate action.  Previously the analysis process would continue to completion however a problem would still be evident as a Process Window warning of an imbalance between applied loads and reactions would be issued (14266).
    • Some tolerance is introduced to assist with meshing for the circumstance of columns within a slab panel that are extremely close to, but not quite, aligned with a slab edge, producing a very thin sliver of slab which can result in highly distorted elements or a failure of the meshing process (14341).
    • For the circumstance of nodes being too close to the edge of a slab panel to be automatically included in the mesh a warning is now issued which lists affected node(s).  The node to slab edge distance at which this occurs is controlled via the setting Analysis Options > Meshing > Hard point to edge distance tolerance (slabs), the default value for which is 5 mm.  On reviewing the warning the engineer can decide whether to reduce the tolerance or alter the model geometry.  Note that the latter is the preferred option otherwise poor quality distorted elements may result (14306).
  • RSA Seismic Analysis - Results View - Storey Shears - these can now be displayed for concrete walls in 2D floor views for Seismic Load cases and Combinations    (54134).



  • Concrete Beams - Flanged Beams (T-beams) - the following enhancements are made to the properties of concrete beams (53225):
    • All flange related sub-options are hidden until such time as "Consider flanges" option is checked On (this makes it clearer that flanges cannot be considered in the analysis when they are not considered in design).
    • The input for openings allowance is hidden when the flange width is user defined (this makes it clearer that the user defined value is used without further adjustment).
  • Performance Improvements:
    • Check Member > RSA - Grouped members - the time required for the Check Member operation for RSA results for members which form part of a design group is significantly reduced.   The performance improvement realized is dependent on the model and number of grouped members involved (54042).
    • Concrete Beams - Interactive Design - the time required to open the Interactive Design dialog, to update results following edits to reinforcement within the dialog and for the check performed when the dialog is OK’d have all been significantly reduced (54180).
  • Steel Design - Plated Sections - All Head Codes - for members with user-defined plated sections applied, when the Head Code of a model was changed and a re-design performed, the design status  would be Unknown and the design details would display “Section is not compatible with currently selected Head Code…”.  Now, provided the plated section is re-selected from the section database prior to design, the design is now completed in this circumstance (14381).
  • Foundation Design - Pad Bases - the operation of the Auto-size rectangular option "proportion according to moment" is improved to cater for applied moments being the same or very similar in both directions.  Previously this could result in an illogical rectangular, rather than square (or very nearly so), solution (53654).

Head Code BS

  • Slab Design - Punching Checks - when a column drop was present in the location of a punching check, the status of the results table for the loaded perimeter at the column face could be incorrect.  The correct status was still displayed in the check details (53938).

Head Code EC

  • Steel Design:
    • Beams:
      • When all major axis ignorable forces (Design > Options > Design Forces) were set to zero, in some circumstances an erroneous Beyond Scope status  “Moment + High Shear” could be issued for the Moment Major check (14316).
      • Combined Buckling Check:
        • In some circumstances unnecessary combined buckling checks could be performed for buckling lengths in which only one of the required forces - at least two of the following being required; major moment, minor moment and compressive axial force - was present (53897).
        • In beams with multiple internal restraints and unrestrained lengths, where the maximum major span moment was outside the Lateral Torsional Buckling (LTB) length being considered and the the maximum major moment within the LTB length was not at a tenth position, the correct design moment could sometimes not be used in the check (54091).
    • Truss Internals - Single Angle, Double Angle and Tee Sections - a combined buckling check was incorrectly performed for truss internals subject only to tension (54044)
  • Slab Design - Punching Checks - for checks located within patches and at column drop locations, for the punching check reinforcement ratio the patch reinforcement was still being considered when the drop punching perimeter was located outside the patch area (54004).

Head Code India

  • Concrete Design - Beams - autodesign is enhanced to increase the number of side face bars until sufficient to satisfy the spacing requirements for these (53792).

Head Code US

  • Concrete Beams - Flanged Beams (T-beams):
    • A new option "Consider as Isolated" is added to beam properties to control the application of clause 8.12.4 (default unchecked).  When checked the limits defined in clause 8.12.4 are applied (previously these were always applied which would result in flanges more often being ignored).
    • Flange widths are now rounded to nearest 1/2"
  • Steel Design:
    • Cantilever Beams - Deflection Checks - when the Dead load and Total load deflection checks were enabled (the default), the Dead load check was not performed and a deflection value of zero was used in the Total load check.  The Imposed Load check was still performed correctly.  This issue was introduced in version 2017 ( and so relates only to this and later versions.  All deflection checks are now correctly performed (14406).
    • Minor axis shear - the formula used to calculate the flange over thickness ratio (used in the calculation of the Cv factor for I-shaped members in shear checks) is corrected to bf/(2*tf).  Formerly bf/tf was used (54075).
  • Composite Beam Design - Deflection - Camber - for beams with camber applied, in some circumstances  the camber value was not correctly subtracted from the total deflection for the Total Load deflection check (14392).
  • Seismic Design - UBC - Sensitivity to P-Delta Effects - models could be over conservatively classified as sensitive to P-delta effects and hence marked as beyond scope.  This was due to the use of delta_m (maximum inelastic response) in place of delta_s (elastic response) in the check to determine whether P-delta effects should be accounted for (54143).
  • Concrete Wall Design - Seismic RSA Design - Autodesign - the vertical reinforcement was increased in autodesign until the reinforcement ratio matched the maximum reinforcement ratio set in Design Options, potentially resulting in very low utilization ratios (54066).
  • Concrete Design - General - the notation used in Materials and design details for the compressive strength of concrete is corrected to f’c consistent with the ACI design code notation (54130).

Reports & D​rawings

  • Planar Drawings - General Arrangement (GA) - rarely, for more complex geometries, the GA drawing for a Frame view would fail to generate (14351).
  • Concrete Beams - Beam Schedule - changes to reinforcement made in Interactive Design for beams forming part of a design group were not correctly reflected in the Beam Schedule.  This also affected reinforcement information in Structural BIM export files (54071).
